LSUS, Loyd bringing hard work to the court for shot at championship
LSU Shreveport basketball season is officially underway for the 2016-2017 season.
While it is early in the season, each player is trying to find chemistry and come together in hopes of winning a national championship. Both LSUS men’s and women’s teams made it to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament last season. They suffered similar fates after being eliminated in the first round. Changes throughout the athletic program with coaches and players.
The #24 nationally ranked men’s basketball team is off to an impressive 3-0 start. The Pilots have scored more than 100 points against two of their opponents. Multiple players have earned double digit points in each of their victories. The Pilots aim to make a statement in their conference and at a national level.
“We are getting the feel for one another still because it is almost a new team. Now that we are playing against other teams we are finding our chemistry; I can’t complain about a 3-0 start. We must be doing something right,” guard Benjamin Batts said.
The Lady Pilots are off to a slower start having lost the first two games of the season in the final seconds of each game. The Lady Pilots entered last Saturday’s contest against Xavier University with a record of 0-2, and left with a record of 1-2. The win landmarked coach Curtis Loyd’s first win as head coach.
“To be honest, it meant a lot to finally get our first win especially with it being at home,” Loyd said. We finally played as a whole even though we had a few rocky moments we still managed to come out with a win.”
The men’s and women’s teams are both projected to finish 3rd in the Red River Athletic Conference. The Lady Pilots take on the Louisiana College Wildcats Monday, Nov. 28 at 5:30 p.m. The men’s team will host Tougaloo College Bulldogs Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
