Walking to school is not always optional, and LSU Shreveport aims to make it a bit safer. The LSUS Student Government Association is working with the city of Shreveport to establish a crosswalk across Youree Drive.
Sarahbeth Rivers, SGA senator, designed the newly passed legislative bill “Youree Crosswalk” with student safety in mind. Rivers, an LSUS senior, was inspired to create the bill after hearing concerns of other LSUS students. Rivers addresses the safety of student residents with limited or no transportation.
“People drive down there [Youree Drive] going 50 miles per hour and more, and so its very scary,” Rivers said. “Some students have similar circumstances and have to walk across the street whether they like it or not.”
The success of the bill requires budgetary agreement between LSUS and the city of Shreveport.
“The state will be responsible for constructing a crosswalk near the Circle K, and LSUS will be required to complete a crosswalk to Youree Drive from the campus,” Rivers said.
While budgetary matters are considered, so is urgency. Students have the power to petition with the SGA to expedite future development.
“Students can have the upmost impact on the speed that this crosswalk is built,” Rivers said. “We need a couple hundred signatures, and the more people who are interested in signing our petition, the more persuasive we can be.”
Rivers urges all students to attend SGA meetings every Monday during common hour in the Webster Room located in the University Center.
