The LSUS Debate Team is currently ranked second in the nation and this year, they are working hard to get to the top. Last week, LSUS hosted the 45th annual Red River Championship Debate Tournament. There were 5 divisions of debate and 11 individual events in the forensics category. Teams from over 20 schools came to compete. While the competitors were waiting for their events to begin, they all waited with their teams and bonded with each other before competing. The debate team’s coach Trey Gibson says this event could not be put on without the volunteers who gave up their time to help host the event. Students, faculty, and staff helped judge the different events in the tournament. They judge on the content of the presentation, the speaker’s delivery, and several other factors. Once each event is over, the judges turn in their ballots for the scores to be tallied. Gibson says they had an amazing tabulation staff from other universities that helped tally the scores. LSUS’ very own Matthew Gedeon and Dom Mercer placed first in the IPDA division. The Debate Team hopes to soar to new heights as they continue the rest of their season.
